Description: This magnificent carving is perhaps the best dancing bear by Nuna Parr that we have ever seen, let alone in this size. Carefully balanced, this bear represents a disguised shaman, poised between heaven and earth and ready to perform mysterious deeds. According to the Inuit tradition, the shaman, or witchdoctor, had magical powers. If he needed to appease the spirits, he would meet with them in another form - that of an animal or bird. The shaman would utilize the form of whatever Arctic animal was needed. In this case, he takes the shape of a mighty polar bear engaged in a ritual dance. The shaman's supernatural power enables this huge creature to step gracefully and weightlessly in the pursuit of his unearthly duties. This sculpture looks great from every angle. The extraordinary balance and animation of the carving, coupled by fine detailing and the overall beauty of the highly polished dark green serpentine, reveal the museum quality of this outstanding work of art. |
