Description: This spirit carving by Baker Lake’s Peter Sevoga is typical of the transformation theme whereby a shaman takes on the form of a animal. In this case, the shaman has transformed into an owl: owls are admired for their speed, stealth and hunting abilities. In the Baker Lake tradition, the medium of Basalt (an extremely hard stone which requires a strenuous labour) is used to transmit the serenity of the shaman’s face.
