Inuit carvings often depict the spirit of an animal by displaying a human face, or combining figurative human details with that of the animal it is representing. With this particular carving by Kelly Qimirpik, the spirit of the whale is shown by the detailed stone carving of a human face mounted upon a large and beautiful piece of whalebone; most likely a vertebrae from the spine. The dark stone on the white bone provides the carving with a strong contrast and sense of overall balance.
